ISPE stands for International Society of Life Science Professionals and has historically been a society for pharmaceutical engineers. However, the UC Davis chapter of ISPE caters to all majors but has an emphasis on the life science industry.
We would like to thank our two recent speakers for taking the time to come talk to us about their profession within industry.
4.19.2007 - Dr. Julio Baez
Dr. Baez is currently a senior scientist at Fibrogen. While working with Monsanto, he discovered the use
of plants (corn) in drug development. In his talk, Dr. Baez introduced the current progress of antibody research,
while also discussing the challenges of using plants versus other methods such as E.Coli and the current trend of mammalian cells.

5.2.2007 - Mr. George Cortessis
Mr. George Cortessis, a UC Berkeley graduate and owner of Process Engineers Inc., was the first
process engineer hired by Chiron. He designed Chiron's first fermenters along with other process equipment.
Mr. Cortessis showed us a number of equipment he designed for biotech and winery industries.
